A Workshop for Conductors

The Vancouver Island Chamber Choir is offering a day-long workshop intensive for choral conductors, led by the choir’s music director Brian Tate. Successful applicants will work with the chamber choir using repertoire in a variety of styles and periods.
The workshop is open to all types of conductors, from music educators, church choir conductors, to community choir conductors and beyond.
We will be accepting a maximum of five participants. There is also an opportunity for a limited number of observers. In addition to the Friday and Saturday workshop sessions, accepted participants as well as observers will be invited to attend VICC rehearsals and receive a package of music selected for the workshop. Observers are free to apply again for future workshops.
Elements of the workshop will include creating a welcoming and safe space for singers, use of gesture, leading an effective rehearsal, elements of vocal technique, and the conductor’s role in making the music come alive.
The workshop includes:
- Friday evening meet-and-greet, overview, and roundtable with Brian
- folder of repertoire chosen for the workshop
- four sessions conducting the choir, with constructive and supportive feedback from Brian
- lunchtime roundtable discussion with participants and observers
- invitation to attend VICC rehearsals Tuesday evenings in March and April
- a complimentary ticket to the VICC spring concert in either Sidney or Victoria
